Big Fat Gypsy wedding makes Sam a celeb

ONE of Channel 4’s most popular TV shows in years has catapulted a young St Helens bride and her husband into the media spotlight. My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, which has attracted up to 8m viewers, has proved to be a smash success. Sam Norton, 17, featured in the second episode following the run up to her wedding to Pat. Their story sparked particular interest as Sam was not a traveller and was marrying into their community.

She married in a 14 stone dress, decorated with fibre optic lights and mechanical butterflies.

And their newfound celebrity status was maintained on Monday with an appearance on Alan Carr’s TV show Chatty Man. They have also set the national media in a spin, including coverage in the tabloid press and comment pieces in the Guardian. Christine Bleakley even modelled a dress similar to Sam’s on breakfast show Daybreak.

Sam and Pat’s story has also proved massively popular with the Star’s online readers, attracting thousands of hits and consistently ranking among the most read pieces. Sam, who has four brothers and a younger sister, said she admires the travellers’ morals and traditions and plans to bring up her children in the same way.

She said: “I'll be a part of a travelling community, but I'll never be a traveller because I'll always be myself. Just because you move into a trailer doesn't mean you're a traveller.”
