Despite all the money you can have, you know you can’t buy the moon and the stars for your home, but if you’re willing to settle for something less ambitious, you can capture the northern lights in your furniture. Italian furniture designer Lapalma has teamed up with the Swarovski Elements, the jewelry house’s custom design division, to produce The Floe table , a futuristic trio of oddly-shaped coffee tables illuminated by crystals and LED lights.
Designed by Tomoko Azumi for Lapalma, the tables are made of sheet metal caskets topped with translucent glass. LED lights and Swarovski crystals are integrated within the metals, which, when activated, light bounces off the suspended crystals. There is an added level of interactivity, the designer says: when you touch the light, the light moves and flickers, much like a shadow play.
The result is an Aurora Borealis effect that’s visible on the table top, especially in a dark room. From afar, the table set looks a lot like they have been shipped from planet Krypton. It is, however, unclear whether the tables need to be plugged or not to make the lights work. But who cares? With this coffee table set, you can have part of the cosmos in your very own living room.
