Dramatic Hairstyles for Extra Oomph!

If you like to make a statement with the way you look, you can really turn heads by choosing a particularly intense and dramatic hairstyle. Styling your hair in a certain way can really make you stand out from the crowd, and dramatic looks are becoming more and more popular with the likes of Amy Winehouse and Lady GaGa setting the standard for individuality.

Amy Winehouse was the main source of the recent revival in popularity of the beehive hairstyle, which originated in the 1960s. The beehive is a huge hairstyle defined by height rather than width – the higher your hair the better. A lot of effort has to be put into achieving and maintaining a beehive, as you’re trying to coax your hair into defying the law of gravity! You will need plenteous bobby pins, hair pins and a couple of hair grips as well as lots of firm hold hairspray. A beehive is an appropriate hairstyle if you want to look rebellious, as most beehives are backcombed and teased into a tangled and messy look. However, you can achieve a sleek and smooth beehive with added effort and the appropriate products.
If you want a more modern look, you may wish to opt for an asymmetrical hairstyle. Asymmetry is extremely fashionable at the moment, with one-shouldered dresses and swimsuits dominating the summer runways. An asymmetrical hairstyle is longer on one side than at the other, almost futuristic appearance. This innovative style of cutting works particularly well with short styles such as the pixie cut, in which most of the hair is cut close to the head except on the top, leaving an extended fringe and bangs on one side of the face. Asymmetrical styles also work with medium or long length hair, although depending on how drastic the cut these looks can be a little less striking. At a medium length, asymmetrical bobs give a twist on the traditional feminine haircut. With longer hair, some women choose to have their hair cut shorter at the back of the neck, gradually gaining length towards the front.

You may want to achieve a dramatic look without having to drastically change the cut and style of your hair. If this is the case, adding hair accessories can help you achieve an instant striking look. Or simply change your hairstyle by using a pair of ghd straighteners. Large hair accessories have risen in popularity recently; partly due to Lady GaGa’s amazingly theatrical headpieces (although it’s doubtful that many regular women would want to go that far!). Large flowers and bows attached to headbands or clips are a safe option and come in a range of colours. For something a little more extreme, miniature top hats attached to headbands have come into fashion. These are usually asymmetrical, with the little hat resting on one side of your head. You will need confidence to pull this one off so make sure you’re comfortable being a little daring!

So if you’re looking for that little bit of added oomph, look no further! Whether you decide to raise your hair up, cut it down or accentuate it with accessories, a dramatic, striking hairstyle is definitely within your reach.
