Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has been admitted to a Dubai hospital following heart complications, triggering intense speculation that he may step down in the face of army pressure over the ‘memogate’ scandal.

The Cable, a blog on the Foreign Policy site which has been leading coverage of the memo allegedly seeking US help against a military coup in Pakistan, reported “growing expectations inside the US government that Zardari may be on the way out”.

Zardari may have angioplasty, and resign due to “ill health”, The Cable reported.

Mian Muneer Hans, chief of the PPP’s UAE chapter, said, “He landed in Dubai last evening around 7.30 and was directly taken to American Hospital. After initial investigations, the doctors decided to admit him for the procedure around midnight.”

Hans said Zardari, 56, had suffered a heart attack five years ago, and was likely to be in hospital for at least 2-3 days.

Pakistan Petroleum Minister Asim Hussain said, “His condition is stable. He has been kept in the ICU because a lot of visitors were coming to meet him…”

In a statement issued after Zardari’s son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari met Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, the government said the president was “in stable condition”, and would return to “resume his normal functions as advised by the doctors”.... READ MORE
