Matisyahu has shaved off his beard - an unorthodox move for an Orthodox Jew.
The American-born reggae and alternative rock singer, born Matthew Paul Miller, shocked fans on Tuesday when he posted photos of himself on Twitter showing off his newly-shaven face.
"At the break of day I look for you at sunrise ... When the tide comes in I lose my disguise," he wrote, quoting his song “Thunder.”
The 32-year-old followed the tweet with a lengthier post on his blog, explaining his physical change also mimics his spiritual change.
“No more Chassidic reggae superstar,” he wrote. “Sorry folks, all you get is me…no alias. When I started becoming religious 10 years ago it was a very natural and organic process. It was my choice. My journey to discover my roots and explore Jewish spirituality — not through books but through real life.”
He added that “in order to become a good person I needed rules—lots of them—or else I would somehow fall apart. I am reclaiming myself.”
While some have taken the singer’s new look to mean he’s gone secular, Matisyahu insists he’s still regilious.
"For all of those who are being awesome, you are awesome. For all those who are confused: today I went to the Mikva and Shul just like yesterday," he explained.
And for fans of his music, Matisyahu losing his trademark facial hair doesn’t mean he’s ditching his talent as well.
“Get ready for an amazing year filled with music of rebirth,” he concluded. “And for those concerned with my naked face, don’t worry…you haven’t seen the last of my facial hair.”
