Waldorf Astoria Shanghai – a legendary icon of social prestige and glamour – hosted the first-ever Shanghai International Debutante Ball

Reigniting a grand British social tradition in Shanghai, the inaugural Shanghai International Debutante Ball was held at Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund on 7 January, 2012.

Waldorf Astoria Shanghai is inspired by the original Waldorf Astoria in New York, which has hosted the city’s glamorous high society at its annual Debutante Ball for over 50 years.

Thirteen specially invited young ladies from the United States, France, United Kingdom and Greater China made their high-society debut in the hotel’s opulent marble halls. The 2012 Debutantes, aged between 16 and 25, each come from prominent families around the world. As well as an esteemed lineage, they were selected according to their personal accomplishments and graceful demeanour. The two Chinese Debutantes were Vivien Lee from Hong Kong and Jen Hau from Taiwan.

A gourmet sit-down banquet for 160 VIP guests and Debutante family members was held in the Grand Ballroom of Waldorf Astoria Shanghai. Dressed in traditional white couture, the Debutantes then descended the hotel’s sweeping antique staircase to the Marble Foyer for the ceremony. This was followed by cake cutting and dancing late into the evening.

“The Waldorf Astoria Shanghai was the ideal venue to host our inaugural International Debutante Ball in Asia. The Waldorf Astoria name has been associated with Debutante Balls in New York and Europe for over half a century, and Waldorf Astoria Shanghai’s historic building has represented the pinnacle of British high-society in Shanghai since the early 1900s,” said Vivian Chow Wong, founder of the Shanghai International Debutante Ball.

The Shanghai International Debutante Ball is founded and managed by Vivian Chow Wong, creator of the May Ball, the only ball brand in China. An extension of the traditions and etiquettes of British Debutante Balls dating back to 1780, the Shanghai International Debutante Ball has the full backing of authorities on British upper-class social culture, and was overseen by official Choreographers and Directors of Protocol. Esteemed high-society leaders, and former debutantes, Jennie Hallam-Peel and Patricia Woodall were the 2012 Ball’s Officiating Guests of Honour.

The 2012 Debutante Ball was sponsored by Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund, KOTUR handbags and image creation consultant, Kim Robinson.... READ MORE

Shocking accusations were made earlier that former Miss Hong Kong's second runner-up, Noel Leung had been cheating on her husband, Hong Kong actor Gary Chan for a restaurateur named Brian Wong.

Based on TVB News World, Noel stressed that the two were just classmates – treating the false allegations as if it was a joke. Her husband had also responded through a text message sharing that the couple had mutual trust in each other.

Such rumours shocked many artists as Noel had been said to possess a 'good wife' and motherly image. Two days ago, the former pageant contestant came forward and said, "I'm very surprised! In my 22-year career, this was the first time I graced tabloid covers!" while also stating her reasoning of not responding earlier was due to her busy schedule.

The 43-year-old had not expected such tale on herself to be published when she realised tabloid photographers capturing images of her. "We went to the same class. All the students get along very well. Brian's restaurant in the Central district is the place where we often gather together," she explained.

Rumours that she and Brian had entered the storage room together were also untrue; as claimed by the Macau-born actress. Showing little knowledge of Brian's Weibo blog post and allegations of flirtatious messages with the restaurateur, Noel had publicized that she will not end her friendship with Brian over some petty rumours.

"I'm a very warm person. In my 22-year career, I have never had this kind of rumour. I feel that linking arms and hugging are normal friendly behaviour, but you may feel surprised," said Noel adding that she had a healthy understanding with her husband, Gary Chan.... READ MORE

Thaipusam is celebrated during the full moon of the 10th month in the Hindu calendar. It is normally held in the last week of January or the beginning of February, depending on the alignment of the sun, moon and planets.

A pilgrimage procession takes place to bring the statue of Lord Muruga, who represents virtue, youth and power, on a silver chariot led by more then 60 Kavadis adorned with peacock feathers from Little India to the Nattukottai Chettiar Temple atop the hill of Waterfall Road.

On the day before (6th of February) old coconuts are smashed along the roads where the Chariot procession will take place.

During Thaipusam day in Penang (7th of February) ,devotees go through a physical endurance of being skewered and pierced on the back and front of their bodies by hooks with miniature urns as an act of penance. Majority of the devotees who go through this act are Indians but Chinese, Sikh and other visitors can also be seen taking part in this act of faith which leaves many devotees and observers alike, spiritually transformed.

In celebration, more than 100 beautifully-decorated make-shift stalls, are erected along Waterfall Road road where charitable Chinese and Indian families give out bottled water, fruits, sweet, buns and prepared sweetened and sour rice to devotees. Thunderous loud music, singing, dancing and the beating of drums of devotional songs by their supporters can be seen and heard far and wide throughout the entire vicinity of the festival.

Upon reaching the temple, devotees will fulfill their vows, offer thanksgiving prayers and penance to Lord Muruga. The chariot is then scheduled for a return trip (8th of February) to start from the temple on the same evening and reach Kovil Veedu before dawn the following day.

This festival of rich culture and deep tradition is an 'out of this world' experience which draws a massive crowd of tens of thousands to these streets in Penang yearly. Visitors especially from outside Malaysia are encouraged to experience this unique religious celebration.... READ MORE

Adelyn HosehboTeenagers Social Media Lesson Singapore
lifestyle,lifes,women,scandals,celebritys,artist,wife,family,politicians,married,bisnis,onlines,vids,pics,magazine,arts

many teenagers in my facebook account that are not concerned or mindful about what appears on their facebook pages or other social media platforms. I am worried for them because I know most of them take it has harmless fun. With the latest incident with Adelyn Hosehbo, I think it serves as a good warning to other teenagers – be more mindful with what you want the world to see!

1. Do not add hundreds and thousands of “random” friends on your facebook unless you don’t mind not knowing who has access to your information. It really depends on how comfortable are you sharing your personal information online. With Adelyn Hosehbo’s facebook page, there are quite a few “friends” of hers that are mocking and scolding her publicly on facebook.

2. Check your facebook privacy settings. In Adelyn Hosehbo’s profile page, you don’t need to be her friend to see things posted on her wall. Again, how much would you want to show the world – while not knowing who is reading it.

3. Don’t post things that may potentially be harmful to yourself. Eg. Posting that you slapped your mother, stole a car, commited a murder… things like these should be kept to yourself. If I slapped my mother, I would probably be too ashamed to even tell my closest friends. Your potential employers might actually see all those on your facebook someday… Go get a diary if you really need to pen it down. I wonder if this generation people still use diary or not…

4. Don’t post your school for public to view if you are likely to get stomped. See now everyone in Singapore knows that Adelyn Hosehbo was from Marsling Secondary School. Not a very good image for your alma mater.

5. Last but not least……… If any readers reading this post has violent tendencies like Adelyn, please speak to your school counsellor or approach counselling centres near your home. A list of VWOs in Singapore can be found here http://www.ncss.org.sg/vwocorner/members_list.asp

I do not like STOMP as it is breeding an anonymous self-righteous vigilante platform as I voiced my opinion here before http://www.deadpris.com/2008/12/16/stomp-singapores-most-disgusting-seen/ but these kids should have seen it coming *sigh*... READ MORE

Chrissie Chau, bikini model and "Million Dollar Babe" of Hong Kong, is set to star in a new movie. The film, a drama about beach volleyball called Beach Spikes, sounds perfect for the model-turned-actress.

Chrissie Chau: Bikini Model 'Million Dollar Babe' to Star in Beach Volleyball MovieIn the movie, which begins airing on Sunday night on Starhub cable, Chau will continue to hone her acting chops playing a waitress named Sharon. She works at a restaurant owned by Kung Fu master Uncle Tao.

Ultimately, a group of beach volleyball players will play a game to win the use of their beloved beach in the film, and there are sure to be plenty of Chrissie Chau bikini shots to entice viewers to continue watching the movie. The model became famous by stripping down to her bikini in a Slim Beauty commercial while she walked the streets of Hong Kong.

Before the movie, Chau did not know how to play beach volleyball, but she spent three months learning. Of her experience with the movie, the bikini star said, "We were shooting on one of Hong Kong's most beautiful beaches and so it felt great. Learning volleyball was like returning back to my secondary school days. I think because of the exercise, everyone's stamina and body reflexes during that time were better too."

While she is ridiculed by others for being a "pseudo model" in Hong Kong, the actress appears to ignore the criticism and simply focus on doing the job she loves to do and doing well. This attitude seems to have served her well over the past few years, and hopefully she will continue in her success despite her detractors.... READ MORE

Li Chun 立春 and saving lives in the new year 2012

Li Chun 立春 and saving lives in the new year 2012
lifestyle,lifes,women,scandals,celebritys,artist,wife,family,politicians,married,bisnis,onlines,vids,pics,magazine,arts

Today 4 Feb, is Li Chun (立春). Traditionally, Li Chun is the day which the new year officially begins, according to the lunar calendar, even though this year's CNY day was on 23 Jan. So, the Water Dragon is officially here! Do ensure you do good deeds and have an auspicious day! I am sure I am going to have a very meaningful day later and I might blog about it too.

Yesterday, I found time to go donate blood at the Bloodbank in Singapore General Hospital. It has been a while since I last donated blood. I used to do it regularly a few years ago. This time I thought since it is the lunar new year, it would be good to do my part in saving lives, and to accumulate some merits. Also, it may prevent any mishap from happening to me throughout the new year (although I am not sure, but according to some soothsayers, they say that if one is meant to encounter any mishap or accident or sickness during the year, donating (losing) blood before that may sometimes just prevent the unfortunate event from happening!).
Truth be told, I have a little slight phobia of getting poked by the needle nowadays. This was from my previous experience when I did regular accupuncture sessions where I have many needles poking into my whole body at the same time. After some time, the phobia developed. Anyway, I always made sure I do not look at my arm, the spot where they were going to insert the needle. It was pretty fast as I squeezed out a pint of my blood in no time (about 10 minutes). During that time, I was actually chanting mantras, especially the Kuan Yin (Chenrezig) mantra and the Medicine Buddha mantra. Then afterwards I dedicated the merits of this act to those who are sick and suffering in pain and especially to those who are going to receive my blood. Here were the stuff I received with compliments from the Bloodbank afterwards. A snack of curry puff or sandwich, a bowl of red bean soup and a cup of Milo/tea/coffee. They also gave me a diary note book, a stress release ball (we actually squeeze it with the palm to pump out blood faster), as well as some Iron pills.

During my blood donation session, I was a little surprised to see that almost half of the donors there were actually not locals. Next time, if we are going to criticise our foreign comrades, I think we have to remind ourselves of some of the foreigners' selfless contribution to Singapore too, and be mindful of our speech. I would encourage you to donate blood if you are able to, to save the lives of those who need it. Pay it forward. Anyway, I am happy that I am in great health and strong to be able to do this blood donation. And I can do it again once every 3 months.
Have a happy Li Chun !... READ MORE

Cantopop singer Rosanne Wong has failed in a legal bid to stop a Singapore bridal shop from using pictures of her wearing its dresses.

The 32-year-old, who is one half of Hong Kong group 2R, was lent the gowns for her pre-wedding shoot in London. In return, she gave the bridal salon's owner a DVD of the pictures.

But when the shop started using them to publicise itself at wedding exhibitions, she accused it of breaching her privacy and copyright. She applied for an injunction to stop the salon from using the shots until a full hearing can take place.

The High Court has now turned down her application, saying the case had more to do with money than privacy. It added that she appeared to have given her consent for the pictures to be used.

Singaporean singer-turned-actress Stella Ng, who married Taiwan businessman Armstrong Yeh in August last year, announced Monday that she is three months pregnant, reported Taiwan media.

"My husband is really great, strikes it with one try!" Ng told reporters.

"This Lunar New Year was very different; everyone treated me like a queen!"

Ng went on to add that her husband had been especially good to her – cooking for her, buying her favourite foods and attending to her every whim – during the past few months, to ease the discomfort and severe nausea she felt as a result of her pregnancy.

"He is really a 100 percent good husband," Ng gushed.

The 31-year-old singer-turned-actress, who recently appeared in the Taiwan drama "Gentle Mercy", told reporters she still could not tell if her child is a boy or a girl because its umbilical cord got in the way of medical scans, and prevented doctors from discovering its gender.

Ng's child, who is expected to be born on August 10, will join a host of celebrity 'dragon babies' (babies born in the auspicious Chinese Year of the Dragon) that will be born this year, such as Hong Kong actor Andy Lau's baby daughter and actress Miriam Yeung's baby boy.

Song Ji Hyo as ‘The Lady in Red’ in Harper’s BAZAAR

Song Ji Hyo was featured in the January issue of Harper’s BAZAAR, featuring a dreamlike pictorial as ‘The Lady in Red.’

Ji Hyo was dressed entirely in scarlet outfits, with a flowing red backdrop, red makeup, even red tinted hair to accentuate the theme. In her first look, the actress looked eerily beautiful with a completely bare face except for some dramatic red eye shadow. A luxurious fur stole and windswept hair made the look very soft, while Ji Hyo’s sensual pose suggested she could have been n a boudoir.

Song Ji Hyo’s second look featured nude makeup and let her inner beauty shine. I especially liked the low back of the dress, which added another element of interest besides the attention grabbing color and sequins. Ji Hyo’s pose, holding her arm while her sleeve slipped ever so slightly off her shoulder also added mystery and sensuality to the shoot.
This wasn’t my favorite look, as I thought dress draped over Song Ji Hyo awkwardly and looked a bit boring. However, I loved the red lip she sported. This was my favorite look from the set. I loved the red-toned blush. It didn’t look overdone at all, instead just providing a bit of glamor and accentuating the theme of the shoot. Despite her red lips and cheeks, Song Ji Hyo’s bare eyes toned down the rest of the makeup for something that could be completely wearableSong Ji Hyo sure showed us ways of wearing red this Lunar New Year; so, which is your favorite look?

Song Ji Hyo Is Dating the CEO of her Agency Baek Chang Joo?

Dispatch reported that Song Ji Hyo is dating “Baek Chang Joo” who is the CEO of her agency C-JES Entertainment. They reported that the two have been meeting since December 2011 and have continued meeting throughout the New Year.
Dispatch found that the two would meet outside of Seoul. Mostly, the CEO Baek Chang Joo would go to Song Ji Hyo’s Ilsan apartment. It is being said that the very detail-oriented, delicate, and gentleman side of Baek Chang Joo had charmed Song Ji Hyo.A representative of the agency is supposed to have said, “It is a meeting between the CEO of an agency and also a celebrity that is a part of the agency. That is why the two are being extra careful. The two are meeting with interest for each other. The rest is about their private life and we cannot say more.”

Currently as of 9:30am on February 1, Song Ji Hyo’s manager, Baek Chang Joo, and the PR team of C-JES Entertainment is not picking up any phone calls. It appears that they are planning on how to deal with the situation.

SINGAPORE: The annual Chingay Parade, held as part of Lunar New Year celebrations, promises a spectacular celebration of love.

Its theme this year is "Love, Care and Kindness Everywhere".
The event, which is into its 40th year, will take place on February 3 and 4 at the Pit Building, next to the Singapore Flyer.

As we usher in the Year of the Dragon, the parade will see an all dragon segment in its opening.
This year, Chingay will celebrate its 40th anniversary and for the first time, the parade will be injected with a variety of theatrical effects and the highlight is the waterway parade.

Kannagi Illamaran, a Chingay participant, said: "The specialty of this year is dancing on the waterway which is definitely the most awesome part. Because that kind of brought me back to my childhood when I was a kid. We used to enjoy playing in the rain and now I've got no opportunity. So this is one chance to be a child again."

While the parade promises high octane action and a burst of colour, it also aims to promote bonding between new citizens and local residents.

Tey Xi Wi, a Malaysian national, said: "I'm a Chinese and I'm taking part in the Indian dance so it's even more special. I get to know the different races and learn the Indian dance together. Very fun. Different races taking part, the teamwork. So getting all of these together to make everything successful, it's very valuable and memorable for me."

Sona Pandey, a Permanent Resident, said: "First time I got the chance to meet the other races and other people and know about them, about their thoughts and views. And dancing together! So it's really very exciting."

And for the first time, Singapore is collaborating with a Chinese Internet TV network - PPTV - that will allow millions in China to view the parade live.... READ MORE

Workers’ Party’s Angela Oon

I am impressed by this young candidate who draws light to Singapore’s growing underclass. It’s easy to see, each time you visit a hawker centre and see the old aunties collecting the tin cans or the blind aunty coming by to sell tissues. Just the other day I saw an elderly man collecting old boxes. It’s becoming more of a common sight. You can read Angela’s full interview at Yahoo Singapore, but here are some quotes that drew me in:

I have to agree with this statement that Angela made:

“invisible poor”, the widening income gap — which “can erode social stability in the long term

“Right now, we have the luxury of implementing such changes in incremental steps because our country is in a period of growth and stability,”

Singaporeans often think of politics as “distant” from everyday life, but politics is “intensely personal”, she stressed. Public policies impact “almost every aspect of our daily lives”.

In an earlier interview, she said, “I was prepared for the worst but hoping for the best.”

Her family, however, were not surprised at her decision.

“They were a little apprehensive (at first)… Now they are wholeheartedly behind me,” said Oon, who has been married for four years and has no children.

While she only became a citizen in 2010, the Kelantan-born Oon has been in Singapore since she was two months old. She became a PR when she was five.

I was not surprised to hear of her family’s initial apprehension, but surprised to hear that 32 year old Angela continues to work as a researcher for a Stat Board. It’s great that she doesn’t face discrimination for joining the Opposition, and that’s the way it should be. ... READ MORE

Workers’ Party (WP) MP for Hougang Yaw Shin Leong has been embroiled in an online storm over rumours of an extra-marital affair with a married female opposition party member.

Yaw’s alleged affair was made public in a report by socio-political blog site TR Emeritus, which said it received several tip-offs by reliable informants, some of whom attend the same church as Yaw. TRE said it ran the report after intensive research and verification.

When asked by The New Paper about the allegations, Yaw, 35, would only say: “I do not wish to comment on rumours.”

Similarly, Yaw’s wife Wang Lin and WP chief Low Thia Kiang declined to comment, reported TNP.

The former also posted a comment on her Facebook page earlier on Thursday morning, which appeared to refer to the incident.

“What’s the role of a journalist/editor? To sensationalise so as to create readership? Putting together piecemeal comments taken out of context such that it creates a picture of ‘reality’? Gutter journalism out on a prowl to create maximum damages. May God bless them,” she wrote.

Yahoo! Singapore attempted to contact Yaw and other members of the WP several times, but could not get a response.

According to TNP, the woman Yaw is alleged to have had an affair with said, “I hope you will not identify me or the other woman involved.”

It is unclear who “the other woman” mentioned was.

She added that she would “neither confirm nor deny the allegations”, reported TNP.

Yaw’s Facebook page was bombarded with comments from followers, calling for him to face the issue and apologise instead of deleting the offending comments. Others insist that the incident is a “PAP smear” campaign designed to kill support for the opposition.

He has also been compared to U.S. President Bill Clinton, who later admitted to having an “improper physical relationship” with 25-year-old White House intern Monica Lewinsky in 1998.... READ MORE
