Zeitgeist 2011: How to browse the information world

Soon this year will end, we invite you to see more big events, interesting news, and figures that make up this year. We analyze billions of queries typed into Google throughout the year to provide an overview of the year 2011 as seen through the lens of Google search.

Methodology

To compile the 2011 Year-End Zeitgeist, we studied a collection of billions of typed queries that Google users in search of this year. We use data from various sources, including Insights for Search and the tool's internal data. We also want any spam filter that same query to a list that we made this year reflect as accurately as possible. All search queries we studied are anonymous, no personal information is used.

A word about how to decipher the list: unless otherwise noted, all search terms are most popular during the years of 2011-are rated according to search queries with the largest volume this year. Sometimes we put the query "rising star", which means we found the most popular searches conducted in 2011, and then make a ranking based on the high increase in popularity compared to the year 2010. Instead, the query "free fall" is very popular in 2010, but mediocre in 2011.
About Visualization

Normalized tracking numbers reflect the number of searches have been performed for a specific term, related to the total number of searches done on Google over time. This figure does not represent the absolute number for search volume because the data were normalized and presented with a scale of 0-100. Each query is divided by the highest point of achievement, or 100. If we do not have enough data, which appears is 0. Read more about how we scale a and normalize the data search.

Regarding visualization "Home"

Clicking "See more detail" for one of the pictures home search will display a summary narrative with graph information to "rising searches" in 2011. This graph shows increase in search volume, the volume throughout the year, compared with the volume-related events, and the corresponding volume of the country.

Note: since this is the 10 queries on the rise globally, a term can appear in the top position in the list on the rise but still have a lower search volume than any other queries.
About visualization "Top 10 List"

Visualization matrix displays weekly volume normalized for the search term for the year 2011. Select query on the left of the screen to see the volume search terms throughout the year. Compare search terms by selecting an additional list. Mouse over the matrix to see related news article, and adjust the slider time to separate the specific time period.

Note: The list is designated as a "rising star" to measure how much each term growth compared to 2010, which means, the term may appear in the top position on the list on the rise but have a lower search volume than any other queries.
